Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect Romans 12:2

Weekly Devotional: Walking Away From the World

Written by Caits Harpold

Walking away from worldly behavior. Where can we start? There are so many influential outlets that we must address.

First, keep in mind that the eyes and ears are the entryway into our being, and we are fed by that which we see and hear. As a new believer I noticed things that had struck me as foul or downright offensive. Watching T.V. for example, I noticed how much violence and sexualization we are feeding ourselves. I noticed symbolism in the show sets that I could no longer unsee. The music that I would listen to, the radio stations, the lyrics of a song - all the sudden coming into form. I began to realize that none of these things were adequate nutrition for me. Moreover, it is not acceptable for my children to overhear.

The renewing of my mind

I found myself listening to Bible audio. I only listen to the local Christian radio stations. I began to dissect the industry and I would not want to be considered in support of any brand which has been known for child abuse. Not seeking entertainment from individuals that are clearly not worshipping my God. These are the types of things that began to stick out to me while I was coming to terms with the reality of this world in comparison to the Truth in God's word. Giving up music and TV shows that are inappropriate, and ridding the house of provocative and unfairly produced clothing was one of the easiest steps that I took towards renewing and protecting my mind and the minds of my children.

Question:

Do the shows music and clothing that you currently watch listen to and wear reflect the new individual that you are in Christ?

Is it good food for the spirit?

If not, I challenge you to make the changes necessary to remove these influences from your life. No show, song, or piece of clothing is worth what you have inherited as a child of God.
